Standards for personal protection equipment:

 guideline

From July 1st 1995 the European guideline 89/686/EEC came into force, which specifies the minimum demands PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) are required to meet. This standard, through a number of guidelines drawn up by the European Council, aims to reach a higher quality level for all products designated as Personal Protective Equipment..

STANDARDS FOR SAFETY GLOVES:

EN420 This standard specifies the general requirements: ergonomic requirements, construction, sizing, high visibility, marking, information for user for protective gloves.

STANDARDS FOR HEARING PROTECTION:

EN352-1 General requirements for hearing protectors – Ear-Muffs
EN352-2 General requirements for hearing protectors – Ear-plugs
EN352-3 General requirements for hearing protectors – Ear-muffs attached to an industrial safety helmet

STANDARDS FOR DUST RESPIRATORS:

EN140 Minimum requirements for half masks
EN149 Minimum requirements for disposable masks

STANDARDS FOR HEAD PROTECTION:

EN397 Covers protective helmets for industry, where falling objects may do damage
EN531 Flame Retardant
EN470 Molten Metal (Welding)

STANDARDS FOR SAFETY HARNESS:

EN355 Personal protective equipment against falls from a height – Energy absorbers
EN358 Personal protective equipment against falls from a height – Belts for work positioning and restraint and work positioning lanyards
EN360 Personal protective equipment against falls from a height – Retractable type fall arresters
EN361 Personal protective equipment against falls from a height – Full body harnesses
EN362 Personal protective equipment against falls from a height – Connectors

STANDARDS FOR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING:

High-visibility clothing:

Class 1 - lowest visibility level
E.G. High Visibility trousers with two 5cm reflective bands around each leg. These become Class 3 when worn with a Class 3 jacket.

Class 2 - intermediary visibility level.
Examples: vests, tabards, bib and brace trousers. Two 5cm bands of reflective around body or on one 5cm band around body and braces to both shoulders.

Class 3 - defines the highest level of visibility.
Examples: coats and jackets with sleeves, coveralls, two piece suits. Two 5cm bands of reflective tape around the body, arms and braces over both shoulders.

STANDARDS FOR FOOT PROTECTION:

EN 20345  - norm specifies protective shoes for the professional usage, which is marked by a letter „S“. A basic parameter of the protective shoes is characterized by a steel toe cap ressisted toward 200 J pressure.  

Safety shoes are later devided into following categories:

SB – shoes fulfills only basic requirements
S1 – antistatic characteristics, sole resistance against oil products, absorption of energy in the heel part
S2 – same as S1 + intersection and absorption of water                        
S3 – same as S2 + resistance against snick (steel midsole)
S4 – SB + antistatic characteristics, absorption of energy in the heel part
S5 – S4 + resistance against snick, relief sole

EN 20347 – norm specifies working shoes for the professional usage, which is marked by the letter „O“. Shoes do not have the steel toe cap that is the basic parameter for the safety shoes only.

Working shoes are later devided into following categories:

OB – shoes fulfills only basic requirements
O1 – antistatic characteristics, sole resistance against oil products, absorption of energy in the heel part
O2 – same as O1 + intersection & absorption of water           
O3 – same as O2 + resistance against snick (steel midsole)
O4 – OB + antistatic characteristics, absorption of energy in the heel part
O5 – 04 + resistance against snick, relief sole
